Speed, time and distance
Speed describes the distance travelled during one unit of time. The three quantities are connected by the formulas distance s = v × t, speed v = s ÷ t and time t = s ÷ v.
How should the formula be selected?
Read the question and identify the unknown quantity. If the question asks for distance, multiply speed by time. If it asks how long a journey takes or how fast an object moves, use division.
Units must be compatible before calculating. Half an hour is 0.5 h or 30 minutes, and one minute is 60 seconds. With km/h, time must be expressed in hours; with m/s, it must be expressed in seconds. Check the result logically: a greater speed over the same time must produce a greater distance.
