Solving simple equations
An equation is a statement of equality containing an unknown. Solving it means finding a value that makes both sides equal. An equation can be viewed as a balance: an operation performed on one side must also be performed on the other.
Inverse operations
- Solve x + a = b by subtracting a.
- Solve x − a = b by adding a.
- Solve a × x = b by dividing by a.
- Solve x ÷ a = b by multiplying by a.
Substitute the resulting value into the original equation. If the left and right sides are equal, the solution is correct. Before choosing an operation, identify how the unknown is connected to the known number.
