The linear function y = kx + b
The graph of a linear function is a straight line. The coefficient k determines its direction and steepness, while b is the y-intercept. From two points, calculate the slope as k = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁).
Graph properties
The function increases for k > 0, decreases for k < 0 and is constant for k = 0. Find its zero by solving kx + b = 0. Parallel lines have equal slopes; for suitable perpendicular lines, the product of slopes is −1.
