Reading charts and data
A chart presents data visually, but its title, axes, units and scale must be read before calculating. A bar chart compares categories, a line chart shows change and a pie chart represents parts of a whole.
Working method
- Determine what one interval or symbol represents.
- Locate the required categories and read their values accurately.
- Calculate a total, difference, proportion or mean according to the question.
A common mistake is to calculate before checking the scale. If axis labels increase by 5, one interval does not represent one unit. The final answer should describe the data rather than give an unexplained number.
