“Altogether” means adding the pencils both children have. Add the second child’s number of pencils to the first child’s number.

Use the numbers in the text, rather than counting the pencils in the illustration.

Adding means putting two amounts together. Start with the first number and count forwards as many steps as the second number tells you.

For example, for 3 + 2, count 4, 5 after 3. Adding 0 leaves the number unchanged.

Adding 2 means adding 1 twice. Take two steps forwards from the given number.

For example, to add 2 to 4, count 5, 6.
