Comparing numbers

When comparing two numbers, decide which is greater, which is smaller or whether they are equal. On a number line, a number farther to the right is greater and one farther to the left is smaller.

Comparison symbols

  • The symbol > means “greater than”.
  • The symbol < means “less than”.
  • The symbol = means that both numbers are equal.

Read both numbers before choosing a symbol. “One greater” means add 1, while “one smaller” means subtract 1.
