Division into equal shares and groups
Division can describe two related situations. In the first, the total and the number of groups are known, so the size of each group must be found. In the second, the total and the size of one group are known, so the number of groups must be found.
If 12 apples are shared equally among 3 children, each child receives 4 apples: 12 ÷ 3 = 4. If 12 apples are placed into bags containing 3 apples each, 4 bags are made. The calculation is the same, but the answer describes a different quantity.
The relationship between division and multiplication
Division can be checked with multiplication. If 20 ÷ 5 = 4, then 4 × 5 must equal 20. This relationship also helps to find an unknown value: for 18 ÷ 3, think of the number that gives 18 when multiplied by 3. Remember that division by zero is undefined.
