Division and its relationship with multiplication
Division shows how a total can be shared equally or how many equal groups can be made. In 36 ÷ 6 = 6, 36 is the dividend, the first 6 is the divisor and the answer is the quotient. In a word problem, identify what each number represents.
How can division be calculated and checked?
For 42 ÷ 7, ask: “What number multiplied by 7 gives 42?” Since 7 × 6 = 42, the quotient is 6. To check, multiply the quotient by the divisor; the product must equal the dividend.
- Zero divided by any non-zero number is 0.
- A number divided by 1 remains unchanged.
- A non-zero number divided by itself is 1.
- Division by zero is undefined.
In a word problem, state whether the quotient represents the number of objects in each group or the number of groups.
