Multiplication facts from 5 to 9
Multiplication facts from 5 to 9 are frequently used in division, area calculations and word problems. Multiplication combines equal groups: 7 × 6 means seven groups of six, so the product is 42. Changing the order of the factors does not change the product, therefore 7 × 6 = 6 × 7.
How can difficult facts be reconstructed?
- Products of 5 end in 0 or 5.
- To multiply by 9, multiply by 10 and subtract one group: 9 × 7 = 70 − 7.
- An unknown fact can be found from a nearby known fact: 8 × 6 is 7 × 6 plus another 6.
Every multiplication fact is connected to two division facts. If 8 × 7 = 56, then 56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8. This fact family improves calculation speed and provides a reliable way to check an answer.
