Sample questions

  1. Use the histogram to find the frequency of interval ___–___.___
  2. How many data values are represented in the histogram?___
  3. Which interval has the greatest frequency?___
  4. An interval contains ___ of ___ values. What is its relative frequency as a percentage?
  5. Four interval frequencies are ___, ___, ___ and x, with total frequency ___. Find x.

Histograms and grouped data

A histogram represents the distribution of numerical data grouped into intervals. Adjacent bars touch because the intervals are continuous. Frequency is the number of values, while relative frequency is their fraction or percentage of the complete data set.

Reading grouped data

Cumulative frequency is found by successively adding interval frequencies. To estimate the mean, multiply every interval midpoint by its frequency, add the products and divide by the total frequency. Check interval boundaries, scale and whether height represents frequency or frequency density.
