Sample questions

  1. Given y = ___x + (___), find y when x = ___.
  2. The line has equation y = ___x + (___). What is its slope?
  3. The line has equation y = ___x + (___). At which point does it cross the y-axis?
  4. Is y = ___x + (___) increasing or decreasing?
  5. Does the point (___, ___) lie on y = ___x + (___)?

Linear relationships and graphs

The equation y = kx + b describes a straight line. The coefficient k is the change in y when x increases by one, while b is the y-intercept. The function increases when k is positive and decreases when k is negative.

Equation, table and context

A point lies on the graph if its coordinates make the equation true. Two points are enough to draw a line. In practical models, b often represents a fixed charge and k a price per unit; distinguish the constant and variable parts of the wording.
